Staying motivated is the number one driving factor to achieving our goals but it's not always as easy as it sounds.
On the days we're feeling low and lethargic, it can be incredibly difficult to find that inner motivation to keep progressing.
To help you out, we've laid out 10 of our favourite ways to stay motivated for you're trying to progress towards your goals
10 Ways to Stay Motivated
#1: Track your Progress
The first step to ensuring you stay motivated on a daily basis is through tracking your progress.
This can keep your motivation levels high because:
- Looking back at how much you've accomplished can be incredibly motivational and empower you to keep pushing on.
- It gives you an idea on how much you have left to achieve before your deadline. E.g. if you're close to the end, you're likely to feel inspired to keep pushing on to the end as the finish line is in sight.
- Measurable goals give you an idea of whether you're on the right track. You can look at how much progress you've made towards your goals and if you're not on the right path, you can change up your approach.
#2: Build Habits
The next and maybe the most important step to ensuring you reach your goals may seem counter-intuitive at first.
Building habits means you don't have to rely on motivating yourself each and every day. Instead you can start to rely on these automatic-like behaviours.
Research shows that after a prolonged period of employing a habit, it actually requires more mental willpower to not abide by the habit. Therefore, you're actually staying consistently motivated and making progress towards your goals.
#3: Have Someone to Hold you Accountable
By finding someone to hold you accountable for making progression towards your goals, they can serve as the main driving force and inspiration for days where you feel lethargic and unmotivated.
The American Society of Training and Development (ASTD) best highlighted this when they conducted a study on accountability in relation to achieving your goals.
They found you have a 65% chance of achieving your goal if you have someone to hold you accountable. This percentage goes up to 95% if you regularly schedule meetings with that person based around your progress.
By consistently visualising yourself making progress towards your goal or even having achieved your goal, you're ensuring that your mind is staying focused upon that goal.
By staying focused upon that goal and by keeping it in the back of your mind at all times, the likelihood of you achieving that goal increases significantly.
#5: Reward Yourself
The next way to stay motivated is to set rewards for once you've made a certain amount of progression towards your goal.
Examples could include:
- Eating some of your favourite foods
- Enjoying some of your favourite music
- Watching a film
- Going out with mates
The options are endless, as long as it's something you enjoy.
#6: Let Action Precede Motivation
Whilst the majority of us believe that one has to be motivated to start progressing towards their goal, the truth is in many cases action can precede motivation.
This means that by simply starting to work towards your goal, you'll actually become more and more motivated as you go along.
The key to this is to just get the ball rolling towards your goal. It may even be the smallest of tasks but just try to get something done, soon you'll find yourself gathering some momentum and increasing in motivation.
#7: Find Inspiration Daily
Whether it be a motivational YouTube video, a picture of one of your heroes or a passage from a book, this is one of the easiest ways to stay motivated.
An easy way to identify what inspires you is to think back to the reason for why you wanted to achieve your goal in the first place.
If it was enough to inspire you to set a goal, it should be enough to keep you motivated on a daily basis.
#8: Join a Supportive Community
Through joining a community of like-minded people with the same goal as you, you don't have to rely on motivating yourself, instead you'll have a whole community to support you.
The communities encouragement, support and expectations can provide you a huge boost of motivation, especially since you will have made a commitment to them.
#9: Set Achievable Goals
It can be incredibly demotivating if the goals you set seem unachievable, instead make sure that they are achievable whilst also ensuring that they're pushing you to be the best you.
If your goals are unachievable, all you're doing is wasting your own time and effort.
By ensuring your goals are attainable you:
- Can have confidence in the fact that your work and progress is going to help you to smash your goals.
- You don't burn yourself out. Remember, there's a very fine line between going the extra mile and burning yourself out.
If you don't know already, PMA stands for Positive Mental Attitude; an essential factor in staying motivated towards your goals.
It's incredibly hard to make progress towards your goals when you're in a negative mind set. If you're not viewing yourself and the things you're doing in a positive light, the journey to achieving your goals is not only going to be harder but also going to be less enjoyable.
On the flip side, if you're happy with who you are and excited to work towards your goals, it's going to be a lot easier to achieve your goals and stay motivated!
Hopefully, this guide will inspire you to test out some of these ways to stay motivated and achieve your goals. If you're able to incorporate all of these steps into your daily life, there's no limit to your progress.
